Annotate documents with NoteA

Open a case's PDFs beside a notes page, tag the passages that matter, flag paperbook pages, and jump between a note and the place it came from.

Open NoteA for a case

  1. On a tablet or computer, open a case from a folder, search, or the cause list.
  2. Tap NoteA, the last icon in the case's top bar.
  3. The first time, NoteA is created for the case. There is nothing to set up, and each case has one NoteA.

Once a case has a NoteA, the NoteA icon also shows in the case header and on the case in your folder. Tap it to open NoteA.

The top bar shows the case number and title, with the listing, court, and other details below. If you opened the case from a folder, tap the title to switch to another case in the same folder.

Availability: NoteA works on tablets and computers, not phones, if NoteA is available on your account. It isn't available for custom cases.

Add documents

  1. Tap Add a document, or + beside the document tabs.
  2. In Add document, choose a PDF from one of the sections:
    • Case files: PDFs attached to the case, including files of its applications and related cases.
    • Court orders: the case's orders.
    • My Library: your own PDFs. Tap a folder to open it.
  3. The document opens in a tab. Add more documents to keep several open at once.

Add File on Case files or My Library uploads a PDF from your device and saves it there.

Tap ✕ on a tab to close it. Your notes and tags for that document are kept, and come back when you add it again.

My Library shows in your own NoteA when your plan includes storage.

Find your way around

  • The document is on the left and your ruled notes page is on the right. Drag the handle between them to change their widths.
  • Each side has its own zoom control. Tap the percentage to return to 100%.
  • The tools are Select, Text, Pen, Highlight, Eraser, and Tag. Select scrolls, follows links, and moves notes.
  • The flag icon after + shows how many pages you have flagged.
  • Undo and Redo are in the top bar.

Write, type, and highlight

  • Pen and Highlight draw on the document or the notes page. Pick an ink colour next to the tools.
  • Tap Pen or Highlight again to set the Thickness (pt). Highlight also has Transparency. Your choice is kept on this device.
  • Text: tap empty paper on the notes page, type, and tap Done.
  • Eraser removes strokes. With a pen that has a side button or an eraser end, such as an S Pen or Surface Pen, you can also erase while Pen or Highlight is selected: hold the button, or turn the pen around.
  • Two fingers always scroll, whichever tool is selected. Once you use a stylus, your finger scrolls and only the stylus draws.

Flag paperbook pages

  1. Tap + at the top right of a page.
  2. In Add flag, pick a colour and a type, such as Annexure, Prayer, or Impugned Order. The type fills in the note, and you can change it.
  3. Tap Save flag. The flag shows on the page.

To change or remove a flag, tap Edit next to it in the flags list. Delete flag removes only the flag, not anything in the document.

If a PDF has its own bookmarks, they become flags the first time you add it.

Find a flagged page

  1. Tap the flag icon beside the document tabs.
  2. Flags lists every flag in this NoteA by document. Search them, or tap a colour to show only those flags.
  3. Tap a flag to go to its page.

On a wide screen, tap the pin to keep the flags list open beside the document.

Tag a passage

  1. Tap Tag, then draw a loop around the passage on the document.
  2. Choose what to do with it:
    • Tag to NoteA places a picture of the passage on your notes page.
    • Write a linked note lets you write by hand next to it.
    • Type a linked note asks you to tap where the note should go, then type it and tap Done.

A tag is a picture of the page with its document name and page number, so it always matches the original exactly.

Jump between a note and its source

  • A tagged passage and its note carry the same number.
  • With Select, tap the number, the note, or the passage to jump to the other side. If the passage is in another document, its tab opens first.
  • Press and hold a note, then drag, to move it.
  • Press and hold a note and let go for its actions: Edit, Go to, and remove. Removing a link deletes the tag and its note; tap Undo to bring them back.
  • Add summary places the case details on your notes page.

To draw lines between passages and their notes, turn on Show NoteA connection in Settings.

Saving and syncing

  • NoteA saves on your device as you work.
  • If cloud sync is included in your plan, NoteA syncs when you leave it. If it can't sync, you see NoteA not synced. Your work stays saved on the device, and you can choose Leave or Stay.
  • If NoteA was changed on another device, choose Keep this device's NoteA, Use cloud NoteA, or Decide later. The copy you don't keep is replaced.
  • If a PDF is updated, NoteA shows This PDF has been updated. Links to the old version appear dashed until you tap Use updated PDF.
  • With cloud sync, Delete NoteA not opened in in Settings removes copies you haven't opened from this device. Cloud copies stay available.
Delete: the delete icon in the top bar permanently removes every note, highlight, tag, and link in the case's NoteA. You are asked to confirm first.
